    A spot or patch that appears from time to time on the sun’s surface, appearing dark by contrast with its surroundings. Temporary areas of concentrated magnetic field on the sun, where convection of hot matter from the core of the sun is inhibited, resulting in cooler and darker areas on the sun’s photosphere
